In her version passed down in the family through Zepheniah Stout, she endured being sold into the white slave market in New Amsterdam. Not sure how true this is, but all of her other facts match this story. I was named after my ancestor, Penelope VanPrincis Stout, by my great grandmother, Grace Lawrence Duryee. I used to have the story of Penelope type out for me by my great grandmother, whom we referred to as 'Grandmother Rainbow'! I most certainly would love to be able to find out which of Penelope's children I am descended from! I lost everything in the 2017 fires here in Sonoma County, California. I also have no contact with descendants of my Great Uncle, Lawrence Duryee, of Breakneck Hill, Middlebury, Connecticut. I am working on my step-dad's family history. His mother was a Stout and she passed along Penelope's story. My step-dad related it to me on a few occasions but only the bare bones, if there were details in his mother's version he didn't remember them. In fact, he thought it was apocryphal.
In pursuing Penelope's story, I found all sorts of different versions - not surprising for an oral tradition - like that old game of "telephone." I thought there must be something to it and attempted to compare the different versions I had read. You did a MUCH better job than I did! Thank you.
The runaway indentured servant story is very intriguing and I find myself wondering if Penelope made up the story about being married and the shipwreck in order to justify being a woman alone in the wilderness.
The story about being disemboweled and nursed back to health seems likely to be true. However, I did get to thinking that she told her grandson who felt the scar to remember her story in order to back up her whole story. Could the scar have been due to something else? A C-section that she somehow survived?

I see that your last post here was back in Jan 2014 and wondered if anything more had been learned between then and now (Dec 2017). Or perhaps you just moved on to other things?
Sharon Guziknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1672157747221539812.post-32335522876841249172017-09-26T05:00:57.776-04:002017-09-26T05:00:57.776-04:00What bothers me most is the utter lack of any hist...What bothers me most is the utter lack of any historical record for Penelope's Indian attack story after the Kath ran aground or wrecked. (For comparison, see all the first source historical accounts of Anne Marbury Hutchinson's massacre). Where's the record of Penelope's ransom, and who paid it? So far, all I've seen is the same shipwreck story, with the earliest mention in 1790 (150+ years after the fact) but no original source historical records for such a fantastical account. If Richard Stout's wife is the same "Penellopey Prince" who slandered her neighbor in the cow-milking scandal, we know she tells tall tales. There's much more credence to the runaway from Kent Island account, from what I've been able to
abstract. But the indenture theory raises the huge question, "How did she do it?" It's not THAT far from Kent Island to Hoboken, but it's not a day's jaunt either. There were still hostile Native Americans in 1648 and essentially nothing European except New Sweden between Kent Island and Hoboken. Pennsylvania didn't come about for another thirty-some years.

Some folks have suggested that she took ship. Well how did a runaway indenture pay the fare? The most likely method isn't palatable; she's our grandmother after all, but what's the alternative?

On that note, one of her many sixth great grandsons, James Stephen Stout, born on Stout Run in Wetzel County, WV, my grandfather, probably ran a house of ill repute in Wheeling. He's in the 1900 Census with his younger brother and seven "single" females between 18 and 30. Either he was in the tall clover or he was the muscle keeping the customers in line. Or both. How would she know it existed? How would she know how to find it? Were there roads in the early 1640's between Maryland's Eastern Shore and New Amsterdam? It's over 200 miles, including a crossing of the Susquehannah River. This theory seriously stretches the bounds of probability.

The other tale, in which the young Dutch couple is attacked in the same way as Penelope's traditional story simply does not comport with the family time series. Penelope and Richard's children were supposedly born between about 1650 and 1670 and there are records of Richard at least being on Long Island in Gravesend with several of the older children.

Now it's certainly possible that Penelope wasn't the woman scalped and mutilated. But it's extremely unlikely that she and her first husband arrived in the 1680's or 1690's. That would eliminate an entire generation of descendants, and they're fairly well documented.
Anandakoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15397105362372268883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1672157747221539812.post-31682273465284470782015-07-31T05:34:30.888-04:002015-07-31T05:34:30.888-04:00try van princen, not van princess.
